The National Alumni body of the Presbyterian Students Fellowship under the leadership of Dr Gaius Onu held its trianal national conference in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria from July 22nd to 25th, 2021. The meeting which was graced by big wigs like the Principal Clerk of the General Assembly, The Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, in the person of Most Revd (Dr) Miracle Ajah, who is also an alumnus, ended with the election of new leadership where Barr Umesi, Samuel Chukwudi emerged as the third President of the national body.
Celebsys had the privilege of being granted an interview by the new president.
Celebsys: In brief, who is Barr Umesi?
Umesi: My name is Umesi, Samuel Chukwudi. I am from Nvosi, in Isialangwa South LGA of Abia State. I had my primary education at Constitution Crescent Primary School, Aba and Junior and Senior Secondary schools at Presbyterian Seminary, Amaekpu Ohafia and Methodist College, Uzuakoli respectively, all in Abia State.
I have a BSc in Environmental Protection and Resource Management and LL.B in Law both from University of Calabar, and presently studying for an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. I was once the Presbyterian Students Fellowship (PSF) President of University of Calabar chapter, Calabar Zone President, and National Secretary of PSF.
Celebsis: Did your new office come to you as a surprise?
Umesi: YES, the new office came to me as a huge surprise, I did not have the slightest imagination of it coming. It was a surprise because I believe there are many more of my seniors ahead of me, people that have held offices at the National level of PSF many years before me, people that I have great respect for and whom I believe are eminently qualified to hold such an office and have the required capacity to do so.
I was only expecting to contribute my quarter towards the building of the PSF National Alumni, maybe from any other office or committee, I never envisaged that the big one was coming my way.
Celebsys: What promises does your fellowship hold?
Umesi: The fellowship holds a lot of promises for the younger generation, to help nurture a godly lifestyle, to help them to live a holy and morally upright life and to bring the youths to the light of God’s glory, while taking through school life, including guiding them through Christian maturity.
And their are a lot of hopes too, hope of a better and brighter tomorrow, and a hope to help and support the indigent once amongst us to be able to go through their academics.
PSF holds a lot of promises and hopes for its members, the church and the world at large as we consistently and diligently work towards building a complete and godly manliness in every member.
Celebsys: As you rise from your trinal national conference, where does the fellowship go from here?
Umesi: The vision of the Alumni is clear and the road map has also been made clear. From here we rise to continue building a more formidable and viral Alumni body that can respond to the demands of an Alumni body.
A good foundation has already been laid by the outgoing administration led by the able Chairman of the Board, Dr Gaius Onu. They have done a wonderful job and have set a standard.
The direction now is to move forward and build on the gains of the past. The direction is to mobilize widely all the PSF Alumni to build the chapters and integrate them into the mainstream of the National Alumni body.
The direction to go is to ensure that we galvanice all efforts and bring together every recourse, both human and material to build a formidable and strong Alumni body in line with the new constitution of the Alumni. The direction to go from here is to move forward.
Celebsys: Sir, what are your vision for the body?
Umesi: My vision for the National Alumni is captured in my answer about the direction to go from here.
And it is summarized thus: My vision is to consolidate on the laid foundation and build a formidable National Alumni body that can rise to its demands and support the PSF to grow and prosper.
Celebsys: Your last word, sir.
Umesi: My last words is to every PSF Alumnus out there. It is time for us to come together to build an Alumni body that can support PSF to grow. It is time for us to remember our common and mutual heritage and return back to it. Let us identify with the Alumni body. Let’s contribute and play our parts toward the building of the Alumni. This is a duty we owe to God and to PSF, let’s do it.
